gijonmapDear Epaphras,

We are on our way home from Gijon, Spain, where we were privileged to be with our area leaders and our PIONEERS (PI) teams.  We were able to experience, albeit briefly, what God is doing in this City.

Gijon is a city of 300,000 in the Asturian region in northern Spain.  The Asturian kingdom of former centuries ruled much of the peninsula. The people are of a politically socialist orientation with the former trade belonging to the mining industry. Asturians have a strong cultural identity, rich in customs and language.  However, they don’t seek to separate from Spain as the Basque and Catalans.  In Asturias, only 1 in 1000 knows and follows Jesus.

We were grateful to stay in a guest apartment above a partner church, Asamblea de Hermanos de Gijon (pictured here).  Over the past 3 years, our team have been training church members to start DBS (Discovery Bible Studies) which focus on studying Scripture as a means of evangelism.

In addition to providing leadership to all PI teams in Portugal, Spain and Basque Country, S and R also lead a launch team which prepares workers to join existing team in their region.  K and L, from New Zealand and the USA respectively, arrived just 2 months ago.  They are both living with Spanish families and are immersed in language and cultural learning.  Please pray for them as they become Spanish in order to preach Jesus in post-catholic Spain.

On the other side of the city, our team’s English Academy, Immersion, has 260 children enrolled this year!   Pray as they seek open doors for the Gospel with kids and parents who are spiritually thirsty.  For two years now, A and L have also been working alongside a handful of local believers to open a youth center with an indoor skate park.  Their youth ministry, called one-hundred-eighty, provides Gospel opportunities to many young teens that desperately need Jesus.

Pray specifically for our leaders as they lead a spiritual retreat for their 8 teams next weekend.

In Jesus,

Steve, Sara, Annie and Julia
